Spring in Santa Fe can be an unpredictable time. One day it’s 70 degrees and sunny, and the next, it’s snowing! While seeing new spring leaves and watching our garden’s come to life can be exciting, it’s important to remember that the safest last frost date in Santa Fe is May 15th, and even later in the foothills. So, before you run out to plant tomatoes, basil, petunias and other typical summer fare, remember the season.
The great news is that the spring months of March, April and early May are perfect for planting leafy greens, such as kale, chard, and spinach. Even certain types of lettuce can be planted in pots in protected areas. And if it’s color you’re looking for, you can’t beat the hardiness and performance of pansies! From little yellow and purple Johnny-Jump-Ups, to the bold faces of the large old fashioned pansies, these guys are sure to brighten up your yard.
Other vegetables and herbs can be planted now, too. Think broccoli starts, peas, strawberries, and tougher herbs like parsley, thyme, and oregano.
